Bharat Bhavan, also known as India House, is the cultural and community home of the Indian Cultural Society of Tasmania.
Located in Glenorchy, Hobart, Bharat Bhavan has been an important gathering place for Tasmania’s Indian community for decades. It is where culture, connection, learning, celebration, and community spirit come together.

Our Story
The Indian Cultural Society of Tasmania was established in 1972 to promote Indian culture across Tasmania and bring the community together.
Through community support, fundraising efforts, and assistance from the Tasmanian Government, ICST was able to purchase Bharat Bhavan in 1988.
Since then, Bharat Bhavan has served as a vital social, cultural, and community welfare centre. It has hosted a wide range of cultural and community activities, including dance rehearsals, Hindi language classes, cultural programmes, community meetings, and social gatherings.
For generations, it has helped keep Indian culture alive in Tasmania.

The Indian community in Hobart has grown significantly over the years. As the community continues to grow, the current building is no longer large enough to support the full range of cultural, educational, and community activities needed.
To meet this growing need, ICST has planned an extension of Bharat Bhavan.
This extension will help create a larger, more functional, and more welcoming space for cultural programmes, events, gatherings, and community support.

The Proposed Extension
The proposed Bharat Bhavan extension has been designed to better support the growing needs of the community.
The extension includes:
• A large hall suitable for events and cultural functions
• Improved space for community activities and programmes
• Greater capacity for cultural events, rehearsals, gatherings, and celebrations
• A more welcoming environment for members, families, visitors, and future generations
This project will significantly improve ICST’s ability to deliver cultural programmes and provide a meaningful community space for Tasmania’s Indian community.
